  • Spray Bottle
  • Vinegar
  • Water
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Peppermint Oil

To make the mattress cleaning spray you will need a spray bottle, vinegar, water, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil. I recommend using a glass spray bottle because there are essential oils in the mix.

Start by adding a cup of vinegar (just the plain white vinegar) and a cup of water to the spray bottle.

Then add about 15 drops of tea tree oil and about 5 drops of peppermint oil to the bottle. Put the spray top on and give it a good shake. That is all there is to the DIY mattress spray.

Using The Natural Dust Mite Spray For Mattresses

To use the dust mite spray you will want to take everything off the bed. Wash your sheets, pillowcases, dust ruffle (if you have one), and comforter. Make sure you are using hot water when you wash them. Hot water will help kill off dust mites and keep your sheets and bedding clean.

Once everything is off the mattress then you can spray it down with the mattress spray.

Give the DIY mattress spray a good shake to mix up all of the essential oils. Then, spray down the mattress. It should feel slightly damp to touch. Make sure that you get the sides of the mattress sprayed well in addition to the top of the mattress.

You may want to spray down your pillows too, however, you can also kill mites on your pillows by putting them in the dryer on high heat for about 5-10 minutes.

Tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and vinegar are all insecticides so they will work to kill off any dust mites that are currently in the mattress. Plus, just about all bugs hate peppermint oil so they will avoid going near the mattress too.

Once you have sprayed the mattress then you just need to let it air out and dry. I recommend letting it air out for at least 4-5 hours. If you need it to dry quickly you can turn on a fan and have it blowing across the bed.

Once it is done airing out then you can vacuum the mattress to remove any dust and then put the sheets and comforter back on the bed. Not only will it kill off dust mites, but your mattress will smell great too!

Preventing Dust Mites

Once you have used the DIY mattress spray to kill off the dust mites you can keep them coming back with a few tips and tricks.

I recommend starting by keeping your bedroom clean and free from dust. At least once a week give your bedroom a good dusting. By keeping the dust from nightstands and other furniture you will help keep the dust mites away.

It is also important that you wash your sheets and pillowcases once a week. Use hot water to help kill off any mites.

You can also keep dust mites out of your pillows by drying them for a few minutes. Just put your pillows in the dryer for about 5-10 minutes. The heat from the dryer will kill off any mites.

When you change your sheets every week take a few minutes to vacuum the mattress. This will help remove any dead skin and keep the dust mites away. Don’t forget to vacuum under the bed, we always have so many dust bunnies under the bed.

Another easy way to keep the dust mites away is to use a mattress cover that is made for that purpose.

Most of them are waterproof plus, they will keep dust mites and bed bugs from getting into your mattress. The downside of a mattress cover is it can be hot to sleep on.

With these easy tips, you can keep the dust mites away. Just make up a batch of this DIY mattress spray and the dust mites will be gone. No worries about allergies and gross bugs in your bed. Plus, it only takes a few minutes of your time to really get it clean.
