First, I’ve compiled 7 natural, plant based oils that promote hair growth. I explain why they’re effective as well as provide you with several popular studies that have proven that they work.
What are some causes of hair loss? It is so important to identify and treat the root cause of thinning hair. The chances of prolonged re-growth are greatly reduced if you don’t acknowledge where the issue is coming from.
Possible Hair Loss Causes
- Emotional stress
- Physical stress
- Postpartum
- Menopause
- Hormone imbalance
- Thyroid issues
- High Blood Pressure
- Exposure to toxins
- Extreme weight loss
- Vitamin & mineral deficiencies
- Allergies
- Heredity
- High Fever
- Side effects of prescription drugs
Black Cumin Seed Oil Not only does this oil strengthen hair, it addresses hair loss. No one quite understands why it happens, but it most likely has something to do with its powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Strengthening hair follicles will in turn cause healthier hair growth. There have been MANY studies showing just how effective this oil has been.
Castor Oil is probably the most well-known and most-used oil when it comes to regrowing hair. Because of castor oil’s high concentration of ricinoleic acid, it is great for increasing circulation. By massaging it into the scalp, increased blood flow will occur, insuring delivery of nutrients to hair follicles. The antioxidants in castor oil also support the keratin in hair and help make hair stronger and smoother.
Cedarwood Essential Oil is an extremely important ingredient when re-growing hair. Study after study prove cedarwood oil (usually mixed with jojoba oil) is very effective when it comes to re-growing hair.
Rosemary Essential Oil stimulates blood circulation which in turn wakes up the hair shaft. Circulation is key when it comes to hair growth. Rosemary also increases cellular metabolism. Plus, rosemary oil has anti-fungal properties as well as antibacterial properties.
Hazelnut oil is full of essential fatty acids, proteins, and vitamins, which can nourish dry hair along with the scalp. It is a great oil for maintaining good hair growth and ideal for stimulating the hair follicles and nourishing them to alleviate dry scalp. As a side note, hazelnut oil is also great at preserving your hair color.
Clary Sage Essential Oil is very stimulating to hair follicles, encouraging hair growth. It also helps balance scalp oils. I’m not sure if it can help balance hormones by applying to your scalp, but it is known as the most effective essential oil for regulating hormones! It also has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Jojoba Oil is said to stimulate hair growth. Jojoba also cleanses the scalp of excess sebum build-up which can clog hair follicles. Also, jojoba oil stimulates circulation on your scalp, bringing blood flow to your hair follicles and encouraging growth.

How to Use:
- In order to get the most out of this serum, it must be massaged into the scalp and left on for a period of time.
- I suggest using 10 drops in the palm of your hand, then massaging all over the scalp, paying closer attention to thinner areas.
- Massage as long as you have time because massage also promotes blood flow.
- Leave the oil treatment on your scalp for at least 15 minutes.
- After the oil has set on the scalp, if you feel it necessary, shampoo your hair. However, shampooing is not necessary if you are not experiencing greasy hair. These oils are able to set on the scalp as a face oil or mositurizer would set on the face.
- I personally suggest using this serum before bed and leaving it on all night. Â This will encourage the oils to penetrate deeper and more thoroughly.
- Use once daily for at least 3 mos. Â Results vary from person to person
Notes
I used a 4 ounce dropper bottle for this recipe. Â Also, a small funnel is helpful.
If you’d like, you could easily cut this recipe in half.

A Few Hair Growth Studies…
If you’re experiencing thinning hair, I really encourage you to try this recipe out.  I couldn’t get over all the studies where people were using cedarwood essential oil or black cumin seed oil and seeing great improvement that rivaled a prescription treatment.
Funny enough-there are no studies showing castor oil effective for hair loss. However, many, many people have reported an increase in hair when using it on a regular basis, myself included.
This study shows how effective the essential oils cedar wood, rosemary, lavender and thyme are with regrowing hair from alopecia.
According to this study, rosemary oil performed as well as minoxidil, a common hair growth treatment, but with less scalp itching as a side effect.
Black Cumin Seed Oil proved 76% effective in reducing hair loss in this study.
This study showed that 70% of people found an increase in hair density and strength after using black cumin seed oil.
My Personal Experience:
I have been using a roll on version of this DIY hair growth serum for my eye brows. Within 1 month, I experienced a noticeable difference in my brows. The change is easy to see and I couldn’t be more thrilled! Try this serum. I believe you will see improvement minus the side effects! In fact, I sell it HERE in my Etsy shop.
The Importance of Ingredient Quality:
Of course, you must choose high quality oils in order to create an effective DIY.  I got all my oils from Mountain Rose Herbs for this DIY. While it might be pricey up front, if this works-it’s so worth it.  If it’s not effective for you, all these oils can be used in plenty other amazing DIYs!
Plus, these oils are very healthy for your whole head of hair.  Your hair from root to tip can benefit from the conditioning and strengthening qualities of this recipe. In fact, you should check out my Hair Strengthening Oil for Color Treated Hair-it’s one of my most used DIYs to date and I love adding cedarwood to it.
For essential oils I go back and forth from Mountain Rose Herbs and Plant Therapy. I love them both however, Plant Therapy has free shipping and lower prices.
Many of us love Amazon’s quick free shipping so I created an Amazon shop where I recommend only the ingredients I have tried and can vouch for. Visit my Amazon storefront HERE.
For those of you who struggle with limp, greasy hair, like me-I created a Hair Growth Spritzer that is water based but contains the essential oils we talked about today. It smells wonderful and you simply spray it on your scalp morning and night! However, if you are desperate for quick results, I would give this recipe a go because I believe black cumin seed oil is a powerhouse hair growth oil.
